Minister Shiyam Highlights Longline Fishing as key Income Source for Fishermen

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, emphasized the importance of longline fishing as a significant income-generating activity for fishermen during a press conference held today by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources.

Minister Shiyam, stated the government's commitment, under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's leadership, to expanding economic activities in the Maldives and increasing the benefits for Maldivians. As part of these efforts, he revealed that the Cabinet had decided on June 24, 2024, to reopen longline fishing.

"We have drafted regulations and consulted with relevant stakeholders for this initiative. We have also sought feedback on the draft regulations," Minister Shiyam stated.

Minister Shiyam, further explained that the reintroduction of longline fishing would help address the current financial challenges facing the country and diversify our fishing industry. However, he stressed that longline fishing would only be reopened after all necessary procedures are completed.

"Longline fishing will become an important endeavor to increase the benefits from our ocean resources," Minister Shiyam added.

During the press conference, the Minister provided additional details about the reintroduction of longline fishing and discussed the benefits that Maldivians could gain from this sector.
