Maldives Customs Services conducted Induction training highlights Fisheries Regulatory Framework

The Maldives Customs Service conducted ongoing Induction Program held for the new recruits of Customs Services officers. A presentation on the regulatory framework governing the fisheries sector was delivered by Fisheries Officer Hawwa Raufath Nizar and Legal Officer Fathimath Shaffa Shiyam from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources.”

This presentation was designed to provide customs officers with an in-depth understanding of the legislative frameworks that oversee fisheries management in the Maldives, including critical regulations concerning licensing and penalties.

Key topics addressed included the enforcement of port state measures to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, detailed information on catch certification, and a list of protected and export-banned species. This knowledge is crucial for customs officers, who are instrumental in ensuring compliance with both national and international fisheries laws and obligations.

Incorporating this session into the induction training for customs officers will ensure they are better prepared to support the Ministry’s broader goals of conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.
