Inception Workshop Held to Improve Anchored Fish Aggregating Devices (aFADs) in the Maldives

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, with aid from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) under the FAO Technical Cooperation Program, conducted an inception workshop on January 20, 2025.

The program focused on improving Anchored Fish Aggregating Devices (aFADs) in the Maldives. This project aims to evaluate existing designs and create advanced prototypes to promote sustainable fisheries.

Minister Ahmed Shiyam inaugurated the workshop. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Shiyam highlighted that the program would leverage modern technology and innovations to further develop the current FAD designs and extend the lifespan of fish aggregating devices (aFADs) used in the Maldives. And stated, this program will bring further advancements to the Ministry's FAD deployment in the Maldives.

Furthermore, the Minister acknowledged the technical assistance provided by the FAO and expressed gratitude on behalf of the Maldivian government.

The workshop was attended by senior officials and technical staff from the Ministry, including FAO Fishery Industry Officer Mr. Jonathan Lansley, International Consultant Mr. Ned Hill, and Local Consultant Mr. Ali Naeem. Additionally, fishermen and other relevant stakeholders participated in the workshop.
