The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources is currently conducting the second Basic Mariculture Training Course of 2026 at the Research and Training Facility in K. Maniyafushi, under the Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme.
This training programme aligns with His Excellency the President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s 100-day “Hafuthaa 14” roadmap, which focuses on the establishment of hatcheries and the development of aquaculture skills among youth. Following the President’s directive, the Basic Mariculture Training Course has been expanded from two courses per year to four courses annually.
The Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme aims to build capacity within the mariculture sector and facilitate the establishment of a sustainable marine aquaculture industry in the Maldives. The programme is being implemented by the Maldives Marine Research Institute, with support from the World Bank–funded Transform Project. It seeks to develop the local technical expertise required to introduce and advance the mariculture industry in the Maldives.
The training commenced yesterday, 24 January, and will conclude on 05 February 2026. A total of 10 participants, selected from various atolls across the Maldives, are taking part in this course. To date, 64 participants have successfully completed training under this programme.
Participants receive both theoretical instruction and practical, hands-on training to enhance their technical knowledge and skills.
The closing ceremony of the Basic Mariculture Training Course is scheduled to be held on Monday, 03 February 2026, from 08:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Research and Training Facility, K. Maniyafushi. The ceremony will be honored by the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ahmed Shiyam.
